ABOUT US

Sandalwood is comprised of experienced professionals in the design and building industries and like any successful team, we are stronger and more effective together!  By partnering with tradespeople, artisans, architects, builders and manufacturers who are also committed to healthy living through interior design, we are able to provide you with a unique approach to residential design.  Guided by the standards of the International WELL Building Institute (Fast Company’s World’s Most Innovative Companies list - 2019) and the Sustainable Furnishings Council, we strive to bring you nothing less than the best that the industry has to offer.  We believe that the way we live and the design choices we make today can have a meaningful impact on our own lives and the lives of our descendants.

What do we stand for?  Driven by a deep passion for healthful living, we stand for the pursuit of wellness.  We do our research.  We form relationships with our makers and our doers.  We find out how materials are made and where they come from, so that we are armed with the knowledge and expertise we need to present our clients with the very best options.  Our designs focus on high quality indoor air, the integration of natural light, responsible energy use, and the promotion of circadian rhythms and ergonomics.  We commit to truth and transparency in all practices and we value healthy, holistic design practices.  We also believe in putting our money where our mouth is, and we invest in wellness, donating a portion of our profits to the fight against cancer.

Owner and Principal designer Kate Baiocco leads the firm with more than a decade of professional interior design experience.  As the sister, daughter and friend of cancer survivors and a mother of two, her passion for the pursuit of wellness is intrinsic.  After graduating from the University of Virginia and finishing design school, she worked under the tutelage of two very different professional interior designers.  One, a LEED AP Fellow on the cutting edge of sustainable design decades before it was a household term, and the other, a multiple award winner of the prestigious Innovation in Design Award.  Wearing every kind of hat from design assistant to project manager to senior designer at those firms, she now brings this invaluable insight and real-world experience to each and every individual project at Sandalwood.  She leads Sandalwood with integrity, transparency and accountability, staying active as an allied member of the professional organization of American Society of Interior Designers (ASID).  Committed to pursuing continuing education in the field of interior design Kate has obtained Certifications as a GREEN Accredited Professional by the Sustainable Furnishings Council and as a WELL AP by the Green Business Certification Inc. and the International WELL Building Institute.
